The Short Version

Below is a one-page version of our syllabus. (That link is a PDF version.) It’s mercifully brief. We’ll talk about the specific details in class.

The One Page Version of the Syllabus – ART 130

What are we doing here?

We’re digging in to the practices and ideas that inform contemporary graphic design. Specifically, two-dimensional print-based design.

Why does this course matter?

Design impacts our lives. Almost everything you touch/use/eat/drive/wear/see was designed by someone. When we learn about design, we become more thoughtful, empathetic, and savvy. We’re better prepared to use design to do, support, and amplify good work.

What will I get out of this class?

Whatever you put into it, friend. If you show up, pay attention, and do the work, you’ll learn some cool techniques for making images, manipulating type, and building meaning in two-dimensional space. You’ll also learn different ways to generate ideas, approach problems, and work with others. You will likely also learn some very good punny jokes.

How will it work?

We will work through 4 ½ projects focusing on different aspects of graphic design. Usually, each project will begin with an illustrated lecture, followed by some warm up exercises that will lead to more complex work. We’ll review things mid-process to see how we’re doing and make changes. When the work is done, we’ll share it with one another and talk about it.

Are we meeting in person or online?

Both/and! We’ll begin by meeting in person and gradually shift to working virtually. Luckily for us, working and collaborating online is a great skill for any beginning designer. We’ll be using slack for our class platform. It has a good user interface and works equally well on desktops, online, and on mobile phones.

What will we make?

Lots of two-dimensional work. Mostly black and white. With a variety of media.

What do I need?

A list of required materials went out via email. Let me know if you didn’t get it.

What happens if I can’t come to class?

We’ll miss you, of course. As you’re able, you’ll need to watch the lecture or demo videos, do the work we did in class, and reach out to me/your professor with any questions.
